Daraiz trotted through the territory of his new home, auburn eyes roving across the land. Parting his jaws, his long pink tongue rolled out, panting. He had been tracking a vole far and wide, and somehow it had escaped him, weaseling through a pile of brush that blocked Daraiz off, forcing him to loop around it. By the time he had made it to the other side, the small rodent was far out of sight or scent. Chuffing, Daraiz lowered himself into a sitting position, eyes glancing around. Sighing, he perked his ears, listening in hopes of finding another animal to prey on. His stomach rumbled loudly, nagging him that he had failed to catch such a simple prey. And that he hadn't eaten yet today. Finding food these days was quite near impossible, but specifically today there were quite a few animals. Perhaps they were all waiting for the fresh water to come, as some if not most was tainted and undrinkable.
Head tilting upwards, Daraiz's gaze moved up towards the clouds, a dark grey in hue, intimidating and threatening to cry upon the earth, drenching everything in its path. "Rain, fantastic." He grumbled good naturedly, staring at the clouds for a few more seconds, before raising himself to graceful ivory paws once again. He chuckled, loping forward once again hoping to find an adequate meal before the sky decided he looked better when wet. He dodged and jumped over various obstacles, before reaching what he could only assume was the heart of the forest. Placing his paws on a fallen log, Daraiz's black and white head followed his medium brown orbs, ears raising to hear better.
He stopped, hearing a crackling noise, freezing on the spot. His nostrils flared, alerting him to the scent of hare. A plump, delicious hair. Just the smell had his mouth watering slightly, and he pushed back from the tipped tree, front paws landing on the soft earth with a quiet thud. He lowered himself closer to the grassy forest floor, stalking forwards. He was certain it had been so long since the Humans were gone, he wouldn't even know what kibble was if someone offered him it. But the taste of the ducks he would catch with his master was still strong on his tongue, and had come to be his favorite meal. A breeze ran its coolish fingers through his wavy fur soothingly, carrying the smell of rain with it. Hopefully that would help mask Daraiz from the rabbit he was pacing after. Tail tucking, Daraiz weaved in and out of the trees, stumps, and bushes, following the scent of the rodent that was growing ever stronger. Licking his chops, Daraiz pressed his ebony nose to the ground, breathing in deeply. He knew he was very near the creature now, and twisted his crown around until he was facing the direction the smell of the cottontail came from. Crawling into a cluster of bushes, Daraiz waited for a few minutes, until the adult female hopped into sight, oblivious. Daraiz shifted his paws until he was in a better position, eyes training onto the small, furry white animal.
As it raised his head and seemingly sensed another's presence, he held his breath, not daring to move until his chance appeared. It finally dipped its head back down, nibbling on the grass and taking its eyes off of the Border Springer in the bushes. Leaping, the he-dog sprang at his next meal, jaws widening to reveal shiny white teeth. The bunny's head snapped up to stare at the attacking beast, giving its signature scream of alarm. Daraiz's fangs snapped shut a millisecond to late, closing on empty air. A growl tore from his throat. 'I am not losing two kills in one day! He thought determinedly, shooting off after the running animal, less than a second behind. Jaws opening again, the multi-colored lad once again jumped, paws stretching out as he reached for the escaping animal. Left claw catching a patch of fur, he managed to land half on, half off the struggling femme, cuspids digging into the fuzz of its neck and stilling its efforts. Prow prodding the carcass gently, he confirmed it was dead, and broke into a grin. "Finally! Can't escape me." He said, laughing slightly. He didn't know why, but it seemed like forever since he had caught anything. Sniffing it gingerly, he deemed it safe of any diseases and took a large bite, grunting in satisfaction as the sweetly flavoured meat slid down his throat, blood staining his muzzle red. Swallowing gratefully, he continued eating, oblivious to the world around him.
